What are the signs of an ingrown toenail?

Ingrown toenails usually present a clear set of symptoms, letting you know that something is amiss. Symptoms of an ingrown toenail include:

  • Tenderness or pain
  • Redness near your nail bed
  • Swelling at the sides of your toenail
  • Signs of infection, including skin that’s warm to the touch or the presence of pus

Many people experience an occasional ingrown toenail, and if your symptoms are mild, the condition might resolve itself as your toenail continues to grow. However, if you experience pain or other issues, call Restore Foot & Ankle Specialists.

How do ingrown toenails develop?

Your toenails should grow slowly, extending from your cuticle area toward the end of your toes. While not everyone has perfectly straight toenails, the general direction should be a straight line. Ingrown toenails develop when the sides of a nail begin to push down or grow into your skin. This leads to pain and other symptoms.

A number of factors can cause or contribute to ingrown toenails. Some of the potential causes include:

  • Wearing overly tight shoes
  • Trimming your toenails too short or in a curved shape
  • Infections in your nail
  • Injury to the toenail or surrounding tissue
  • Certain medical conditions

In addition to these factors, some people simply have anatomical foot differences that lead to recurring ingrown toenails.

What are some treatment options for ingrown toenails?

When you come in for care, your practitioner assesses your ingrown toenail and discusses the circumstances that led you to notice symptoms.

In some cases, preventing future ingrown toenails is a matter of making changes to your footwear. Shoes that are narrow at the toe can create undue pressure on the sides of your toenails. High heels can also lead to issues, as they force your body weight to shift forward onto your toes.

In many cases, your practitioner can perform treatments like trimming, reshaping, or splinting the affected toenail during your visit. Lifting the nail is often a good approach, allowing your nail to continue growing in a healthier direction.

In some cases, surgery is the best way to address a severe ingrown toenail or recurring problems with nail growth. Part or all of your toenail might be removed, allowing your skin to find lasting relief from the pressure and pain of ingrown toenails.
